Commercial Solar PV Project Manager

Oversee budgets, timelines, permits, and team collaboration to ensure project success while meeting client and regulatory standards.

This document is a model job description for a project manager working on commercial and industrial solar PV installations. It has been developed by Solar Energy UK’s Skills and Workforce Steering Group and sets out the key responsibilities of the role, as well as the skills and qualifications expected.

Overview:

The Project Manager (PM) shall oversee all aspects of the solar project from pre-construction onwards. At pre-construction phase the PM in conjunction with project designer / engineering team shall discuss and understand the project scope of works, identify and adopt position in CDM (Construction Design and Management) regulations hierarchy and adhere to relevant status.  

Responsibilities:

Understand the scope of works of the project. Be confident to ask the appropriate engineer / designer if the scope is unclear.

Be confident to question / analyse the scope / method of the project at design stage and contribute at this stage.

Contribute to managing the workflow, gaining critical information from all stakeholders (suppliers, stores, designers, consultants, sub-contractors, or clients) to maintain the critical time path for all projects.

Develop program of works in conjunction with client expectations, highlighting potential delays or circumstances halting works, allocating resource / sub-contractors / specialist contractors.

In conjunction with program of works, understand key milestones and act in advance of program slippage or unplanned situations.

The planning and coordination of people, and progression of projects (e.g. site surveys, pre-project costing).

Ensure the right materials and engineering resources are available at the right time, know what is required of them, and adhere to the company standards.

Oversee site set up, including issuing health and safety file to operatives.

Ensure all site operatives understand and adhere to appropriate health and safety project site rules.  

Ensure safe working practices are adhered to on-site day to day, monitor risk assessment and method statements.  

Ensure the above is under the umbrella of construction phase plan.

Delegate tasks and responsibilities within the confines of project site.

Report and liaise with client / key stakeholders, organise site progress meetings.

Is aware of when the escalation of issues is required and escalates as needed to the Operations Director and company management.

Monitor budgets for work packages, materials and bill of quantities.

Liaise with principal designer or engineering team, ensuring compliance and standards are being met on the project as well as arranging and coordinating project meetings with clients and stakeholders.

Be able to produce reports on project progress weekly / monthly.  

Assist with the closing of the project (client handover pack completed, certificates, final invoicing, lessons learnt, completed documentation etc).

Be able to conduct client handover and operational walk through.  

Carry out site surveys where required for existing and future projects.

Computer literate. Able to use basic Microsoft or equivalent programs such as Xcel, Microsoft project.

Qualifications:

Essential -

Have experience in team leader / supervisory role prior to PM position

SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) or equivalent

Basic first aid

CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) or equivalent trade / project management CSCS card

Microsoft project fundamentals

Qualifications to progress to:  

CDM awareness / CIOB (Charted Institute of Building) fundamentals

PRINCE2

Project Management Professional (PMP) / Program Management Professional (PgMP) certification

ACP (Agile Certified Practitioner) certification

BSc Project Management
